Avoiding an auto accident once the snow flies gets harder each winter. As the population in Spokane grows we see more cars on our roads. That means a greater opportunity for an accident. Eastern Washington hasn’t seen much snow, yet, but it’ll be here soon. There are several steps you can take before driving and while you’re behind the wheel to help protect your family’s safety.

This time of year there are a few things we all should all check:

  • Tires – Inspect your tires for wear and proper air pressure and if you have snow tires, now is a good time to put them on.
  • Brakes – Have your brakes inspected periodically.
  • Vehicle Lights – Be sure to check all lights, including headlights and turn signals, periodically.

Consider storing a few other items in your vehicle:

  • Ice Scraper – Having your scraper ready ensures you’ll have good visibility.
  • Winter Gear – Extra winter hats, gloves and a warm blanket.
  • Flashlight – Shorter days means a flashlight with extra batteries might come in handy.
  • Emergency Kit – Nobody expects to be stuck on the roadside for long, but if it happens, then having a kit that includes first aid, extra food and water could be a gamechanger.

We all know the basics for safe winter driving, but it never hurts to have a few reminders:

  • Consider Staying Home – If the weather is really bad, then don’t go out!
  • Slow Down – Decreasing your speed improves traction and reduces stopping distance.
  • Increase Following Distances – Sometimes the old rule of “one second for every 10 miles per hour” just isn’t enough. The more distance you allow between your vehicle and the one if front of you, the greater your chance of avoiding a collision.
